They walked along listening to the singing of the brightly colored birds and looking at the lovely flowers which now became so thick that the ground was carpeted with them. There were big yellow and white and blue and purple blossoms, besides great clusters of scarlet poppies, which were so brilliant in color they almost dazzled Dorothy's eyes.
"Aren't they beautiful?" the girl asked, as she breathed in the spicy scent of the bright flowers.
"I suppose so," answered the Scarecrow. "When I have brains, I shall probably like them better."
"If I only had a heart, I should love them," added the Tin Woodman."I always did like flowers," said the Lion. "They of seem so helpless and frail. But there are none in the forest so bright as these."
They now came upon more and more of the big scarlet poppies, and fewer and fewer of the other flowers; and soon they found themselves in the midst of a great meadow of poppies. Now it is well known that when there are many of these flowers together their odor is so powerful that anyone who breathes it falls asleep, and if the sleeper is not carried away from the scent of the flowers, he sleeps on and on forever. But Dorothy did not know this, nor could she get away from the bright red flowers that were everywhere about; so presently her eyes grew heavy and she felt she must sit down to rest and to sleep.

M U T A T I O N Mutatie Aether Manipulatie Mutatie uitleg Aether manipulatie is een, wat dat betreft, kort en samengevat woord, voor een wat ingewikkelde en uitgebreide mutatie.
Om Trip’s mutatie, aether manipulatie uit te leggen, moet er eerst kennis zijn van wat aether is. Aether is het materiaal dat het universum vult. Het is noch koud of warm, noch nat of droog. Aether beweegt met de rest van het universum in een circulaire beweging en heeft houvast op de hemellichamen en houd deze op hun plek en letterlijk draaiende. Volgens astronomen is aether subtieler dan licht, doordringend en niet materieel. Dit is in eerste instantie correct, als je het bekijkt vanuit het standpunt waar aether niet bewerkbaar en te manipuleren is.
Dit is waar Trip’s mutatie een kijkje komt nemen. Zijn mutatie is in combat veelal op lange afstand bruikbaar. Hij is in staat aether door zijn tegenstander te sturen en vervolgens, bijvoorbeeld, een soort supernova te creëren. Supernova’s zijn stellaire explosies, die even kort het universum verlichten. Ze stralen op zo’n moment evenveel energie uit als de zon. Het is dus niet vreemd dat dit Trip zijn tegenstander behoorlijk wat pijn zal doen en mogelijk inwendige bloeding zal veroorzaken, als het al niet erger is. De minder heftige aanvallende kant van aether is simpelweg gamma-ray bursts. Dit zijn korte flitsen van hoogenergetische gammastraling die hij rechtstreeks op mensen kan afschieten.
Ook niet geheel onbelangrijk om te weten is dat alles bestaat uit moleculen, of nog kleiner atomen of nog kleiner subatomaire deeltjes. Lucht, planten, een televisie, het menselijk lichaam. Alles bestaat uit subatomaire deeltjes. Zo ook de aether die alles is.
Zo kan Trip bijvoorbeeld uit subatomaire deeltjes, ofwel quarks, materie creëren. Dit kan van alles inhouden. Zo lang zijn kennis ver genoeg gaat om de blauwprint te weten van de gewilde materie kan Trip, in theorie, praktisch alles creëren. Om een voorbeeld te noemen, nemen we een houten tafel. Trip moet weten hoe een tafel eruitziet (niet heel moeilijk) en moet weten uit welke moleculen hout bestaat (cellulose, hemicellulose en lignine). Vrij simpel. Een moeilijker voorbeeld is een vuurwapen. Naast dat hij de moleculaire opbouw moet weten (koolstof en ijzer), moet hij ook weten hoe een vuurwapen van buiten en binnen eruit ziet en werkt, dus de mechaniek.
Nog een ander iets is dat Trip door aether objecten kan laten zweven. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan hoe aether de hemellichamen als planeten op hun plek houden. Makkelijk is dit echter niet, omdat alles in circulaire beweging gaat en daarnaast gaat alles iets trager dan iemand die de normale mutatie telekinese heeft. Bij hen vliegt het daadwerkelijk en is het controleert, waar het bij Trip weer zweven is en nogmaals, in circulaire bewegingen.
Mutatie grenzen Het limiet bij Trip’s mutatie zit hem vooral bij de kennis die hij heeft. Zowel op scheikundig gebied, als externe kennis van voorwerpen. Ook zijn astronomie kennis moet aardig op pijl zijn. Verder, omdat aether overal is en Trip deze constant voelt en van haar aanwezigheid op de hoogte is, is dit wat vermoeiend en zwaar op zijn lichaam. Je zou het kunnen vergelijken met iemand met astma: ademen kan soms verstikkend zijn en bedrukkend en het put uit. Het gebruiken van zijn mutatie is in perspectief veel minder, tot niets, vragend van zijn energie en doet hij zonder kwalen.
Voor het studeren van de nodige kennis en het op pijl houden van zijn energie, slikt Trip in het geheim met de regelmaat zijn eigen gefabriceerde drug. Een XTC en cocaïne mix, maar dan totaal anders, die Trip NRG (eNeRGy) noemt.
Verder, hoewel Trip ervan overtuigd is dat het mogelijk is, vind hij het onethisch, en gewoonweg onverstandig om levende dingen, zoals mensen, dieren en planten te creëren. Ook vermoed Trip dat hij Black Holes kan creëren, maar doet dit evenmin omdat hij goed op de hoogte is van de mogelijke gevolgen op zijn omgeving. Tot slot probeert Trip zo min mogelijk de aether uit de daadwerkelijke ruimte, die de hemellichamen op hun plek houd te gebruiken, omdat hij mogelijk hiermee de kosmos zou kunnen beïnvloeden.

I N D I V I D U A L I T Y Character Trip is een vriendelijke, oprechte jongen. Hij is behulpzaam en een harde werker en zal niet snel iets zomaar opgeven. Hij is behoorlijk intelligent, te zien aan zijn uitbundige kennis over astronomie en scheikunde. Ook op emotioneel vlak heeft hij grote intelligentie en kan hij zich goed in situaties inleven. Hij kan vaak en veelal ietwat uitgeput overkomen, dit vooral als hij een tijd lang geen NRG heeft gehad. Trip is bijzonder perfectionistisch, iets wat niet vreemd is als je bedenkt dat zijn mutatie om sommige vlakken precisiewerk is. B A C K G R O U N D History Prologue Toen een vrouw uit Rusland besloot om in Wales te gaan studeren, had ze niet verwacht daar de liefde van haar leven tegen te komen. Toch was dit het geval, toen zij en een wat oudere Welshe man elkaar omver liepen en prompt verliefd op elkaar werden. Het tweetal stapte al na een jaar in het huwelijksbootje en waren nog geen half jaar daarna zwanger. Complicaties zorgde echter voor een zware en moeilijke bevalling. Aleksandr Louis Tolkien werd kerngezond geboren, maar zijn moeder moest het met de dood bekopen. Aleks’ vader had het hier natuurlijk, vooral in het begin, erg zwaar mee. Het was om deze reden dat hij en zijn zoontje bij z’n oudere zus, Emileigh, introk die hem hielp met de verzorging van de pasgeborene. En hoewel na een tijdje Aleks’ vader weer wat steviger op zijn benen stond, werd al gauw besloten om bij Emileigh te blijven wonen, beide voor het gemak en voor de gezelligheid, want ook Emileigh was weduwe.
Childhood Aleks was een lieve, blije en enthousiaste baby, peuter en kleuter. Altijd was er wel een lach op zijn snoet te vinden, compleet met kuiltjes. Al vroeg toonde Aleks interesse en zekere intelligentie als het bijvoorbeeld kwam op lego en k’nex, speelgoedauto’s al snel achter zich latend. Ook puzzels en optelsommen waren al vroeg geen probleem meer. Nu was Aleks geen drukke baby, of in ieder geval niet voor een lange tijd achter elkaar. Hij deed maar zelden huilen en viel na een tijdje spelen alweer heel snel in slaap. Naarmate Aleks ouder werd leek hij alleen maar langer en meer te slapen. Zijn vader en tante begonnen zich er zorgen over te maken en vroegen zich af of Aleks mogelijk een of andere slaapstoornis had ontwikkeld. Dokters ontkende dit en vertelde hen dat alles qua bloed in orde was, dat Aleks zelfs kerngezond was. Emileigh, die zelf mutant was, had een sterk vermoedde dat Aleks wellicht ook een mutatie zou ontwikkelen, maar deze gewoon op een wat rare manier manifesteerde.
Ze had natuurlijk geen ongelijk. Aleks was wel degelijk mutant, hetgeen echt op kwam zetten toen Aleks zes jaar oud was. In plaats van de k’nex stukjes met de hand in elkaar te klikken, betrapte Emileigh haar neefje erop dit zonder handen te doen, alsof met zijn gedachten. Dit voorval deed zich vaker voor en werd geaccepteerd als telekinese, hoewel dit niet echt een geldige oorzaak was voor Aleks’ slaapstoornis. Toen Aleks zeven jaar oud was echter, moesten ze hun diagnose bijstellen. Aleks, die in dat afgelopen jaar veel interesse had gekregen in de ruimte en altijd blij aankondigde dat hij astronaut wou worden, creëerde een supernova. Een lage dreun, daarna kleurrijke zwieren in een circulaire beweging. Het lego gebouw van de Eiffeltoren lag aan stukken over de gehele woonkamer, sommige stukjes wat verschroeid. Na onderzoek, besloten Emileigh en enkele van haar mutant vrienden dat Aleks’ mutatie iets met aether te maken had. Dit vermoeden werd bevestigd toen Aleks oud genoeg was en begon te klagen over hoe de lucht en de ruimte zo zwaar waren.
Teenage Years Aleks z’n mutatie bleef ontwikkelen. Toen hij elf jaar was, en hij behoorlijk wat onderzoek had gepleegd naar zijn eigen mutatie, kwam hij op het ingenieuze idee de moleculen in de aether te manipuleren. Hoewel zijn tante niet zeker wist of dit daadwerkelijk mogelijk was, vooral na de vele mislukte pogingen, was Aleks uitzonderlijk zeker van zijn zaak. Het was echter pas na een jaar dat hij z’n eerste voorwerp, een zilveren armbandje, wist te creëren. Dit was nadat hij erachter kwam waar de 925 voorstond, gegraveerd in een van zijn tante’s sieraden.
Hoewel Aleks steeds meer in aanraking kwam met zijn mutatie en hier steeds meer affiniteit mee had, had dit ook het nadeel dat hij chronisch vermoeid was. De aether haalde hem nog sterker dan zwaartekracht omlaag, alsof hij een rugzak droeg met bakstenen. Aleks was zestien toen hij zijn nickname Trip kreeg. Het was rond deze tijd dat hij voor het eerst in aanraking kwam met XTC. Nooit had hij van zichzelf verwacht of gedacht dat hij drugs zou proberen, maar de pillen hielpen wel degelijk met het opkrikken van zijn energie. Nadelen had XTC natuurlijk ook, maar in eerste instantie was dit voor, nu Trip, de beste oplossing.
Dat was tot zijn tante en vader hem betrapte. Trip werd praktisch aan het huis gekluisterd en werd door de vermoeidheid nu ook haast gebonden tot zijn bed. Het was slechts een korte tijd erna dat er mensen voor de deur stonden die Trip mee wouden nemen naar een school, speciaal voor mutanten. Trip stemde toe en liet Wales achter zich liggen. Trip was zeventien toen hij zijn hoogstpersoonlijke drug, genaamd NRG, wist te creëren.
